Island Stream serves as a gateway to connect people with nature and the ocean.Located in Yuasa, Wakayama, our base offers the perfect access point to explore the World Heritage sites of Kumano, Koyasan, and Nanki, all within reach of Kansai’s urban areas. We chose this location to help people connect with nature and enjoy a richer, more fulfilling daily life. With the belief that "Life Is Good," we offer sea kayaking and SUP tours,along with trekking, camping, schools, and events, to bring people closer to the beauty of the natural world.

Tsuyoshi Hirata
Founder & Chief Guide

Tsuyoshi has loved nature since childhood, exploring the sea, mountains, and rivers. He is one of the few who have completed a sea kayaking journey around Japan. As a certified examiner by the Japan Recreational Canoe Association (JRCA), he is a highly experienced professional in kayaking adventures.

 He has traveled extensively by kayak in over 20 countries and regions, including India, Indonesia, Fiji, Palau, Tanzania, the Arabian Peninsula, Thailand, New Zealand, Tasmania, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, New Caledonia, Tahiti, the Andaman Islands, Oman, and Malaysia.

 Beyond kayaking, Tsuyoshi is passionate about music, mythology, anthropology, and contemporary art. He also writes based on his experiences, with published books including "Inspiration from the Waves" and "Tales of the Sea: Kuroshio Street." During tours, he loves sharing stories about the ocean and nature, ensuring safety and enjoyment through lessons and training.

Akihiko Sato
Guide Leader

Nicknamed "Kibby," Akihiko started his career as a rafting and trekking guide before discovering sea kayaking in New Zealand. After returning to Japan, he trained with Akira Yahata, a renowned ocean adventurer, at "Churanesia." He later traveled through South America for a year and has been working with Island Stream and Patagonia since 2018. 


Kayaking Expeditions: 2021: Osaka to Kagoshima via the Seto Inland Sea (750 km) 2022: West Kyushu Expedition (Hirado Island to Goto Islands to Amakusa to Koshikijima to Kagoshima, 650 km) 


Akihiko aims to guide unforgettable sea kayaking and outdoor experiences that spark a sense of adventure. He hopes to leave lasting memories and looks forward to talking about nature, travel, parenting, and the future of our planet with guests on his tours.
